Who Can Participate?
To participate in competitive boccia at an international level, an athlete must meet three exact requirements governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and World Boccia. The player must have an eligible Underlying Health Condition, a specific Impairment Type, and meet the Minimum Impairment Criteria.
1. Underlying Conditions
- Cerebral Palsy
- Traumatic Brain Injury or Stroke
- Spinal Cord Injury (quadriplegia)
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Spina Bifida
- Severe Amputations or Limb Deficiencies
2. Impairment Types
- Hypertonia: Increased muscle tension and stiffness
- Ataxia: Neurological coordination destruction
- Athetosis: Involuntary, slow writhing movements
- Impaired Muscle Power: Permanent force reduction (e.g. spinal injury)
- Limb Deficiency: Absence of bones or joints
3. Minimum Criteria (MIC)
- Four-Limb Impact: Impairment must limit function in all 4 limbs
- Trunk/Leg Involvement: Requires playing from a wheelchair
- Upper Limb Limitation: Visibly reduced capability to hold, grip or propel the ball
4. Entry Protocol
- Medical Form (MDF): Stamped and signed by a licensed doctor
- In-Person Evaluation: Assessed by a certified panel before matches
- Passport: Holds a valid passport of the represented nation
